Rating: - The Tenor Sings Gregorian
This is a very fine album which I enjoy immensely. Andre Bocelli's tenor voice is a pleasure to listen to. He has scored 5 Stars with me. His various versions of "Ave Maria" are splendidly performed. It is a best-loved religious song. "Panis Angelicus" is sung so well, so meaningful, which is the way the song is to be sung. The song is from 1871, when Franck was a resident organist at St. Clotilde in Paris. The work was originally scored for tenor, organ, cello, harp, and double-bass. Mr. Bocelli has done an album worthy to be in anyone's collection, especially if you are a 'music lover.' The material that is covered on the album is directly related to 'The Mass' as it has been sung in the past generations of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, most specifically done in Gregorian Chant. The listener is taken back to a time pre-Vatican II. A most pleasing voice has taken me back to my childhood singing in the choir, as I have sung most of these songs also. And, I was pleasured by these wonderful songs then and now. Another beautiful song is "Pieta, Signore." Someone whom may enjoy this album may also enjoy listening to Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavorotti, and also, Michael Bolton. They all are tenors with beautiful voices. The song "Ave Maria" has also been sung by the three above-mentioned artistes. This album is comparable to the other artistes' rendition's of "Ave Maria" that has been sung also by the above. I would highly recommend this album to any one who appreciates the sound of an excellent tenor such as Andre Bocelli.
Rating: - Andrea's on a roll!
Although he once got hit on by an Amazon.com Editorial Reviewer in the sense that his voice gets sort of strainy in opera, I can at least agree with the Editorial of this album that Andrea Bocelli sings with such an unfeigned directness, it's guaranteed to "expand his already enormous following even further." And it has. "Sacred Arias" made the US Top 20 when release day for it arrived, and no wonder: he does so well on this CD that he actually makes you cry. "Sancta Maria" is a very good example. Having remembered a Classico commercial with Mascagni's "Cavarellia Rusticana" (whatever that means) overture, it actually brought tears to my eyes! Other favorites here of mine include Schubert's "Ave Maria," which is an absolute pleasure as performed here in Andrea's native Italian, because it's always fun to hear a famous piece sung in a whole new language. And Chung leads his troopers, the Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra, through the whole thing with almost no trouble, more than I can say for "Aria" on which certain pieces as I have explained worked Andrea too hard, so hard that I almost lost respect for him. Oh, no! Anyway, I won't dwell on that. It's bad enough I've also trashed "Per Amore," the Japanese Bocelli debut CD, because I already have every single track from there on my "Romanza" and "Sogno" CDs. But I have no business trashing this album, because this is the Andrea Bocelli some "Romanza" haters (but I'm not one of those) wished to hear. Bocelli has once again proven his role as an opera "superhero" to his truest fans. Time to work on "Sacred Arias 2." In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for the upcoming "Love Duets" CD, and then I'll probably explain on Amazon what I think about it. Until then, it's "time to say goodbye"! Ana from New York
Rating: - I really believe his voice is a gift from God
No singer, ever, has made such a lasting impression in me as Andrea Bocelli. I never listened to vocal classical or opera music. Until I heard Andrea Bocelli and this album. These beutiful songs - like all four Ave Marias, Pieta Signore etc are so full of beauty and emotion that even those who aren't so much into music should notice the difference between Bocelli's perfect but still natural voice and other famous artists like Pavarotti. I liked both the songs and his voice, and I also recommend on listening to Bocelli's 'Sogno' which is probably his most remarkable work ever published. Givin fiver stars for this tenor is not enough. Nowadays I'm so deeply motivated by this tenor that I practise singing almost daily, am a member of two choirs just to be able to sing even a song or two of Bocelli's *somewhat* adequately, some day. 'Nuff said :)
